Language Arts

Our elementary Language Arts program combines explicit phonics instruction, rich literature, and structured writing development in a dynamic, multi-aged classroom model. Grounded in research on how students build lasting literacy skills, this course emphasizes both foundational phonics, reading fluency, and the development of deep background knowledge through meaningful content.
Students rotate through carefully designed learning pods based on readiness and topic focus:
Writing Lab: Direct instruction and guided practice in handwriting, grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, and structured composition. Students explore multiple genres—from poetry and narrative writing to informational and opinion essays—while learning how strong writing is built step by step.
Phonics or Book Club Reading: Students move from explicit, phonics-based reading instruction to advanced, content-rich book clubs designed to build deep comprehension and background knowledge. Instruction is intentionally structured to guide students from learning to read toward reading to learn, ensuring they not only decode words fluently, but also understand, analyze, and engage with complex ideas and the enjoyment of fictional reading!
Reinforcement Stations: Strategic games and applied literacy activities strengthen retention, fluency, and confidence.
Rather than isolating reading skills, this program integrates vocabulary development, knowledge-rich literature, and structured writing so students grow as thoughtful readers and clear communicators. The goal is not only to improve mechanics, but to cultivate articulate, informed students who can read with understanding and write with purpose.
