Student Deans
At Collective Academy, we strive to meet each student where they're at academically, which we understand requires a more holistic view of each student. In order to accomplish our vision more fully, every student at Collective Academy is assigned to a Student Dean.
While our teachers are asked to know where a student falls and is progressing within a specific subject, a Dean of Students monitors a student across all of their studies. This helps communicate a more accurate picture of a student's progress within Collective Academy to student parents, who are updated regularly throughout the year. Any concerns with grades, POD placement, classes, teachers, or systems can be addressed through the student's Dean, allowing for a convenient one-stop contact for parents.
Student Deans' monitoring of a student is primarily academic; however, we understand that occasionally other factors, such as school social life, home life, and emotional state. This consideration is how our Deans are able to support not only traditional private school students, but students attending one of our hybrid homeschooling programs as well.
Structuring School for Students
One of the main issues we've noticed in education is the glaring disconnect between three groups: teachers, administrators, and parents. All three groups care about students and their growth, however those very same students are being negitavely affected by the division and even fighting between these groups. When building Collective Academy, this common pitfall was accounted for, and structures were put in place to ensure the focus remains on the purpose for our existence: the students.
Collective Academy has an unusual organizational structure that protects against fracturing and division between parents, administrators, and teachers.
Parents:
We keep our parents close to their students' education through our requirement of parent volunteer time. While this may be unfamiliar for some families, this requirement helps parents have a more intimate understanding of how classes, curriculum, events, and schedules function at Collective Academy. The empathy and community it brings to the school is almost palpable, and the students' education is enriched by the diversity of experience in the classroom, even though parent volunteers do not teach.
Teachers:
Our wonderful teachers, in turn, are relieved of the typical pressures and burdens that are placed on them at schools. They do not handle discipline of any kind, they are not in meetings with parents all day, and they do not need to deal with miscellaneous tasks such as fetching supplies. Our teachers are here to do what they do best and love: teach! Collective Academy asks a lot of our teachers, including keeping track of individual academic levels, accounting for individual student needs, and clearly communicating students' academic progress and potential.
Administrators:
One of the reasons why our fantastic teachers can focus on their craft is due to our exceptional administration team. Our administrators are asked to be in the very center of everything: they are required to teach at least one class a year to ensure they understand the teachers' experience, they need to keep track of students' holistic progress as Student Deans, and they are the main point of contact for all parent questions & concerns. Our administration team is the reason our school operates as smoothly as it does, without losing its personal touch and Collective Culture.
